The Ultimate Guide to a Comfortable Journey
Holidays are a joyful time for the whole family, and at Golden Star Ferries we make sure that our four-legged friends travel in complete safety. Whether they are companion, therapy, or assistance animals, the process is clear and organized.
In this guide, you will find all the official regulations and useful tips for a carefree trip in the Aegean Sea.
1. The Booking Process and the “Zero Ticket”
Many owners wonder if their pet needs a ticket, since its transport is free. The answer is yes. According to current legislation, every living soul on board the ship must be registered for safety and capacity control reasons.
What is a zero fare ticket?
When booking or issuing your tickets, you must declare your animal so that a zero fare ticket can be issued. The ticket issued must include the following information:
- Health Book Number: Information about the animal’s health is required.
- Tag or Microchip Number: Identification of the animal is mandatory.
- Size of the animal: Whether it is small or large.
- Category: Whether it is a companion, therapy, or assistance animal (e.g., guide dog).
Remember: Unaccompanied pets are not allowed on our ships. An escort is mandatory throughout the entire journey.
2. The 10-Kilo Rule: Small and Large Pets
In accordance with regulations, Golden Star Ferries separates amenities and access to areas of the ship based on the weight of the animal in order to comply with hygiene rules and ensure the smooth operation of the voyage.
Small Animals (Up to 10 kg)
If your dog or cat weighs less than 10 kg, the rules are particularly flexible:
- Access everywhere: They can accompany you on all categories of ships (conventional and high-speed) and in all public areas (lounges, decks).
- Required Equipment: They must be transported in special cages or carriers.
- Health: You must have their health and vaccination certificates with you.
Large Animals (Over 10 kg)
For our larger friends, the procedure is different:
- Enclosed Areas: They are not allowed in enclosed common areas and lounges, both on conventional and high-speed ships.
- Exception: Only service animals (e.g., dogs for the visually impaired) are allowed in indoor areas, provided they have the necessary equipment and certificates.
3. Staying on board: Where will your pet stay?
Golden Star Ferries has invested in special facilities to ensure your pet travels in comfort and safety.
Special Accommodation Areas (Kennels)
Specially designed accommodation areas are available for large animals. These areas are thoroughly cleaned and adequately ventilated.
Important Note for Speedboats: On the company’s speedboats, passengers are not allowed to stay in the pet areas during the voyage for safety reasons.
Moving around the decks
If you wish to have your large dog with you, you may remain in the outdoor areas (decks). This applies to conventional ships.
- Leash/Harness: The use of a leash is mandatory and the companion must supervise the animal at all times.
- Responsibility: The companion is fully responsible for the behavior of the animal and the safety of those around it.
4. Special Pet Cabins
For those traveling on conventional ships and wanting absolute comfort, choosing a cabin is the ideal option.
- Limited Number: We have a specific number of cabins especially for passengers with pets. Due to high demand, early booking is essential.
- Hygiene Rules: For public health reasons, pets are strictly prohibited in cabins that are not designated as “Pet Friendly.”
- Comfort: In the cabin, your pet can relax without the stress of crowds or the noise of the ship.
“A pet carrier is an investment in your pet’s peace of mind, especially if the journey takes several hours.”
5. Obligations and Care: The Role of the Companion
Traveling with a pet is a right, but it also comes with responsibilities. As a companion, you must take care of:
- Health Book: It must always be with you and up to date. The ship’s authorities have the right to request it at any time.
- Hygiene: You must keep the animal’s living space clean. Be sure to bring special cleaning bags with you.
- Safety: The animal must never be left unattended or cause discomfort to other passengers.
- Water and food: Hydration is crucial, especially in summer. Always carry a portable water bowl with you.
6. Tips for a peaceful journey in the Aegean
To ensure a positive experience for everyone, follow these practical tips:
- Walk Before Boarding: A long walk in the port of Rafina before boarding the ship will help your dog release its energy and do its business.
- Familiarization with the Carrying Bag: If you have a small animal, let it get used to the carrying bag a few days before the trip by putting its favorite treat inside.
- Avoid Heavy Food: Do not feed your pet shortly before departure to avoid motion sickness.
- The Smell of Home: A blanket or toy from home inside the carrier or kennel will make your pet feel safe.
